Job Description:

Energy is vital to our daily lives, and at the same time, climate change remains a serious concern. Within Shell’s Catalyst and Analytical Technology organization, we use human ingenuity, innovation, and advanced technology to develop solutions which unlock more and cleaner energy and provide sustainable chemical products for the future.

Where you fit in-

Shell’s Catalyst and Analytical Technology organization resides within Shell Projects & Technology. We are a global entity, with staff, laboratory facilities, and process installations in the United States, the Netherlands, India, Germany, and Belgium. We provide deep technical expertise in catalyst technology, materials science, analytical measurements, digital capabilities, process engineering, and experimentation to develop new products and new/improved processes. We specialize in end-to-end scale-up and deployment of solutions from initial discovery to commercial application in world-scale facilities throughout the world. Staff within the organization collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders in core technology areas and evolving energy transition opportunities including Upstream Technology, Downstream Manufacturing, Integrated Gas, Shell Catalysts & Technologies, and Power Technology.

What’s the role –

The R&D Researcher is a key scientific leader in the Chemicals Catalysts R&D team focused on delivery of catalyst technology and process solutions through core expertise in heterogeneous catalysis, materials science, inorganic and organic chemistry, and process technology. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and collaborate on projects to discover and develop fit-for-purpose catalytic and materials solutions. The scope of the role encompasses projects involving development of advanced catalytic products in core chemical applications and novel programs necessary to drive the energy transition, promote circularity, and achieve sustainability. The researcher will have the opportunity to explore fundamental studies with a clear purpose toward solving real-world problems, while also being a leader and contributor in deploying commercially viable technology solutions.

The Researcher will lead challenging and impactful programs as a member of a global community of Shell researchers while collaborating with external experts, partners, and suppliers. You will have access to extensive experimental facilities and capabilities including high throughput testing, pilot plant units, extensive analytical and surface science expertise, and sophisticated computation and data analytics techniques. Subject matter experts and skilled experimental operations teams are readily available to support the Researcher in the conduct of R&D programs.

The Chemicals Catalysts R&D team applies deep expertise and capability in a number of technology areas. We support well-established and growing businesses involving selective oxidation, hydrogenation, and environmental catalysts. We explore new opportunities involving new routes to chemicals and/or new process technology. And finally, we collaborate across Shell to apply our catalysis, materials, and testing expertise to solving problems in circularity, sustainability, and low carbon energy solutions. The Researcher is expected to take a lead role in devising targeted R&D programs, leading project teams, and engaging regularly with key stakeholders

What we need from you -

A legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

Degree in chemical Engineering or equivalent (PhD preferred) with at least three (3) years’ post-degree experience leading catalyst and/or materials R&D projects.

Specific skills and experiences must include:

A collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with diverse teams.

A strong desire to take on difficult technology challenges and deliver impactful results to solve key problems of interest to Shell.

Sound knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply experimental skills particularly with regard to synthesis of catalytic materials and utilization of reactive testing units.

Sound understanding and ability to select appropriate analytical and characterization techniques suitable for understanding and evaluating materials.

Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical results to a variety of stakeholders, peers, and customers.

Close communication with stakeholders globally, including staff in the catalyst business, technical service, sales, marketing, and key process technology groups.

Desire to engage across the Shell R&D community and with external partners to foster growth of the community and enhance the capabilities of the organization.
