Job Description:

The Analytical Technology organization is well on its way to transforming from a service organization to a true technology delivery partner for our main (Shell) customers. The Analytical Experimentalist in the US Chromatography team, which is part of the global Chromatography team within Analytical Technology, plays an important role in delivering a broad range of quality chromatographic and titrations analysis mainly gas chromatography analytical techniques for applications ranging from downstream, upstream, integrated gas as well as R&D programs in P&T.

Where you fit in -

The Experimentalist in the US Chromatography team will be an expert in process chemistry, chromatography and various analytical techniques such as XRF, ICP and distillation and will be responsible for operational excellence for providing and developing reliable, fast and cost-effective analytical measurements leveraging a broad variety of analytical techniques, wet chemistry, experimental set-ups and coordination activities.

As a member of the chromatography team, the experimentalist, will be expected to partner with our (Shell) customers, understand their needs, leverage their broad analytical knowledge to provide quality and reliable measurements. With broad analytical knowledge, the successful candidate would be able to work with a scientist to scout external emerging technologies as well as select appropriate hardware and develop a method for relevant Shell applications. They will also help improve lab workflows and efficiencies, as well as help with instrument trouble-shooting, maintenance and setting up new experimental set-ups.

The experimentalist will serve as an important resource in the department especially for quality, lab operations, problem-solving and lab safety, but also in guiding/mentoring less experienced staff/OSSPs (On-site Service Providers). They will also engage and share best practices in the global team.

This position has no direct reports.

What’s the role?

Provide technical expertise and operational excellence for the development, delivery and improvement of process chemistry, chromatographic and other analytical techniques.

Perform independent day-to-day hands-on work in the laboratory including sample preparation, coordination and analysis in conformance with established analytical and safety procedures, using a range of hazardous chemicals, laboratory instruments and automated robots, with due attention to safety and quality.

Technical responsibility for method development, gate keeping, improvement in workflow and efficiency, and implementation of new capability with guidance from senior colleagues.

Manage high volume of analysis to ensure customers technical needs are met in timely and cost-effective manner by closely interacting with internal customers, with high level of stake-holder engagement.

Collaborate with local and global Analytical as well as other Shell colleagues on various routine as well as non-routine problem- solving projects, and new project and R&D initiation and implementation including automation and robotics.

Responsible for identifying periodic maintenance, trouble-shooting and repair of analytical instruments and coordinating with subject matter experts to drive to a solution as well as working on setting up custom experimental rigs.

Monitor analytical technology developments outside of Shell and identify innovations with the potential to create value for Shell and collaborate with scientist to implement them.

Mentor, train and guide less experienced staff/OSSPs as well as actively participate in Global Skill Network for Liquid and Gas Chromatography.

Be very cognizant in quality data analysis, implementation of QA/QC, Business Management Systems and ensure documentation is compliant.

What we need from you?

A legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

Deep (10 years) experience in process chemistry and chromatography as well as strong background in spectroscopy, solid characterization, elemental, distillation, titrations and other analytical techniques.

Wet chemistry experience is needed along with exposure to a broad range of analytical techniques.

Expertise and mechanical hands-on experience in setting up experimental units, problem solving, attention to detail and organization and project management skills is needed.

Knowledge of MassHunter, Chromeleon, StarLIMS, and Microsoft Office is a must.

Continuous improvement mindset with enough operations knowledge to implement workflow improvements and efficiency gains, with knowledge of robotics and automation as a plus.

A high technical curiosity, learner mindset and ability to work across natural teams without organizational authority is essential for the job.

Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with relevant industrial experience is required.

Strong interpersonal, communications and stake-holder engagement skills are highly valued.
